How to Make Peace With Where You Are

One of the hardest lessons in life is to actually be okay with where you are.

We all have goals and dreams. We see where we want to be, but a conflict comes up because where we are is not there yet.

We bring attention to the lack and focus on “what is not” rather than what we want. The fastest way to get where you want to be – whether it is to have more money, lose weight, land your dream job or find a perfect romantic match – is accepting where you are.

Making peace with where you are is not about giving up or surrendering. It is about acceptance. And in acceptance is freedom, and in freedom is a lack of resistance, which creates a powerful pull forward.

Embracing where we are in life is powerful, but it is one of the hardest things to do. If you feel frustrated because you aren’t where you want to be, or you resist where you are, these tips can help.

1. Grab Good Vibes

Good vibes are about getting in touch with your feelings and raising your emotional vibration, accessing good feeling vibes. Some emotions are more low energy than others. Feeling sad, angry or resentful carry a heavier emotional weight. When you feel these, you are usually tired, stressed and have low energy. Uplifting emotions such as joy, peace and happiness are higher vibration. When we express those, we are usually light, expansive and free.

If you are frustrated or angry, feel those feelings fully. Then reach for emotions that feel better, and literally grab good vibes. This means reaching and climbing for what feels good. So if you are angry about your situation, feel that anger then move into a more open and accepting emotion, such as gratitude. When you appreciate where you are, you can get where you want to go much faster.

2. Get Out of the Past

When we try to make peace with where we are, we have to let go of our past. Humans often cheat on their future with their past. We fall victim to past situations that have not worked. In the past, I tried this and it didn’t work..

Stop hanging on to regrets, mistakes and pain. Recognize the past is in the past and taking fears from then to play out in the present will only hinder your ability to move forward. Allow yourself to be in the moment and embrace where you are, free of past mistakes or blunders.

3. Drop the “When–Then” Syndrome

The when-then syndrome is a mentality. When X happens, then I will be happy. When I get that dream job, then I won’t be so miserable. When I lose weight, then I will feel good. This is a no-win zone. The best way to feel more peace is to access the feelings you want.

Ask yourself:

  1. How can I cultivate the feeling I want now?
  2. What steps can I take to cultivate that confidence/peace/happiness in the moment?

The reality is we don’t have to wait to be happy. We always have a choice. We can be angry at what we don’t have or what isn’t working, or we can be thankful for what we have.

Great post Shannon! So fitting for me at this time, funny how we always get what we need, when we need it. I have been struggling to truly make peace with several things lately. Though I know that some of these are changes and transitions related to a recent move, a move that was a choice and one that I wanted for some time, yet I’m still struggling to embrace it. This was such an awesome reminder to get back to basics: gratitude, appreciate the now, the past was yesterday, look for today’s silver lining everyday, work for an awesome tomorrow everyday, live, love, laugh and be happy now.
