Overwhelmed with Negative Energy? How to Cleanse Your Energy in 3 Simple Steps

Click to watch. If you dig this message share it here.

I was recently in a situation that was incredibly stressful, so much so that I started to cry from anxiety. I called my mom, hysterical, because she always seems to know how to help, and she reminded me that it is the energy of the situation, not the actual situation that caused pain. Simply put, I could transform the situation by transforming my energy.

We live in an energetic world where everything is affecting each other based off of an energetic signature. Like attracts like, and the law of attraction suggests that everything is energy and will join forces with similar energies. But there are times when energy clashes.

I found myself in an extremely negative situation, and for this positive girl, it clashed so much, it pushed me into tears. By identifying my out-of-alignment energy, I was able to take steps to calm myself and choose love and light.

Everything has an energetic pulse: your pets, your relationships, even the books you read and the music you listen to.

A recent study showed that when one person in a relationship becomes stressed out, their partner’s blood pressure rises as well. Stress and anxiety can affect our energy and all of those around us.

Protecting your energy can be challenging, especially if you don’t realize that energy is actually what is stressing you out. Sometimes we don’t even have to say anything—we just feel it. Negative energy is a soul-sucking mood killer, and it can affect you in ways you don’t even know.

If you are overwhelmed with negativity, whether it is yours or someone else’s, these simple tips can help:

1. Let Light In

Clearing energy is something that, for some, may seem a little “out there.” But when you are stuck in negative energy, trying something new might be the best solution, so give it a try. Every space and thing holds energy. Even though you can’t see it, you’ve probably sensed it. There are multiple ways to clear the energy of a negative situation or place; one of my favorite ways is to use a sage smudge stick.

Light the stick, and when it catches fire, blow it out to create an incense effect of smoke. Set your intention for each room as you wave the sage around to remove negative energy. Some people say a prayer or repeat a powerful mantra, like “I cleanse this room of any impurities, negativity.”

Is sage too woo-woo for you? Simply open your windows or doors to create a similar effect. You can also invite love into the situation by simply closing your eyes and repeating, “I let love and light in to this situation. I choose light and love.”

2. Try Emotional Freedom Technique

All negative emotions are felt through a disruption of your body’s energy. Your body is a powerful tool for stress relief and self-healing. With Tapping, you can take control of negative situations and transform the energy as well as the outcome.

Based on the doctrines of traditional Chinese medicine, Tapping is a breakthrough way to achieve emotional balance using your own body. By tapping on key meridians on your body, similar to acupuncture (without needles), you release negative energy and tension.

You can learn more on this subject with Nick Ortner’s book.

3. Remove Yourself

One of the fastest ways to escape negative energy is to physically remove yourself from the situation. Go outside, get fresh air, take a hot bubble bath, or go journal.

If you can’t remove yourself physically, then practice removing yourself mentally. If the situation is causing you extreme stress, breathe in deeply and release out. Each breath you take, repeat, “I let love in, I release all negative energy.” Breath in and out.

The most important thing to remember is you must always be aware of your energy and take steps to protect it. When you take an active role in preserving your energy, you will feel more in control and balanced.

How do you clear your energy? What works for you? I would love to hear in the comments below.

I love this! I have been so stressed out this week – I decided to sit in the sun and breathe.
Self awareness doesn’t always come right away, it’s only when I realize that I am stressing that a light bulb goes on in my head hahaha

I’ve been a positive person all my life and within the last 2-3 months I have been meditating and this has helped me tremendously with my stress at work….I’m a nurse working 12 hour shifts, so say no more. My problem is my husband who is probably one of the most negative people I know, but of course I love him to death as he is good to me, is a good provider and will do anything for me. I don’t believe in the least that he even knows that he is negative, as he asked me last night when we were out walking the dog, what he can do about the “guys” at work who are always negative all the time and he is sick of it. Of course I tried to offer some help and then in a round about way told him that he himself is exactly like those guys. He got defensive and obviously doesn’t see how he is or if he does he won’t change. This is a daily occurence, and I find it absolutely draining and I don’t know what else I can do to help him change his attitude. It seems like whatever is said turns into a negative conversation and sometimes an argument. I don’t even want to talk for fear of the negative comments that will come out of his mouth…..any help!!!!!!

Hello Karen, thanks for reaching out. The trick is too focus on the positive aspects of him. When you focus on the negative it amplifies. So make a list of what you like about him, or focus on sending loving thoughts to him.

The outside world is our mirror and teacher. If I’m emotionally charged by something I know there is something for me to look deep inside myself for. Having love and compassion for myself and those around me helps make every relationship better. I went through this same situation with my dad when I was thrust into living with him again after losing my husband. I noticed that when I started working on myself, my emotions and behaviors, he started working on his, and I never said a word. We now have the relationship we used to have and it’s phenomenal. He’s back in my support stands vs. my fighting arena. Love and light to you and your husband!

If I need to clear negativity from my energy, I imagine a beam of light shinning down on me and the light flowing through me from my head to me feet, pushing out all the darkness and hurt. I then see and feel the love of the earth as a pink mist that rises out of the ground and fills me with pink color and love.

Thanks for being a positive beacon of light in our lives, sending love, hugs and joy your way.

Norma – I love your idea. It sounds beautiful. And Shannon – as always – your message resonates with me. I am also a positive person and I struggle so much when in a very negative, conflict-filled environment. Thank you for sharing!

    Hi Shannon,
Love this post (and all your others, too!). This one particularly resonated at this time since I’m beginning a monthly workshop next week about energy and the first session is all about transforming negativity! While I practice (and suggest!) all the tips you give, I’m so excited to share your inspiring video and blog with my community. Also appreciate all of the tips people shared in your comments. Thanks for your great work!

Love these easy quick tips and references! I’ve got the breathing thing dialed in;). But I’m definitely going to look more into the tapping. I have also seen how shifting my perspective in the moment to find the gift in the situation helps me too. Looking at it with my “what’s right” glasses instead of my “what’s wrong” glasses helps me take the heaviness of the negativity and make it lighter, since there is no getting rid of it completely. Thanks for sharing more great tips! Keep them coming:)

Thank you Michele – I’m definitely going to try your tip of looking at a situation with the what’s right glasses as I wear the what’s wrong glasses way too much.

I am basically a truly, positive person. However, I do have times, for example a few days ago, when it hits me that something is not right with my feelings and I can’t place why I feel that way. I have learned to actually “shake” the feeling off. I shake my hands and legs as if to shake the uncomfortable feeling out of my system. I then take a minute to remind myself of everything I have to be grateful for, and believe me…..I have a lot to be grateful for. Then I go about the rest of my FABULOUS day!

Yess, this resonated so much with me. I just recently talked about this in my mailing list too. I’m a sensitive person, and I find that I can absorb a lot of other people’s energies. If i’m not careful, the negative ones can stay with me and weigh me down. Thank you for these 3 steps Shannon!

Thank you Shannon! This was needed. Recently, I had an encounter with a man ( I am a divorcee), who was openly flirting with me while I was at work at a Long Term Care Facility. I finally decided to go out for coffee with him to find out what he was really feeling. I found out he was married so I was feeling rather disappointed in some men which left me with a negative feeling I did not want. All of your suggestions are really helpful so now I can go back to work and be myself again.
