4 Ridiculously Easy Steps to Get Your Motivation Back

Watch Today’s Episode: Ridiculously Easy Steps to Get Your Motivation Back

I thought about calling this article how to not just survive but thrive because when we are motivated to take action and follow through on our goals, we are living our fullest potential. But staying motivated can be a chore, especially if we lose sight of our goals.

We’ve all been there. Really pumped to achieve a new goal, lose weight, revamp our romance, find a new job that we love, and then the motivation disappears. It just stops; we loose focus, we forget why we started, and life rushes in and takes over. Before we blink, motivation is taking a back seat to our life and we begin to feel stale, frustrated and guilty.

What most people don’t talk about is the pivotal moment between where you were and where you want to be. That moment is right now, and right now you might be feeling less than motivated to make your dreams a reality. I know the lack of motivation all to well.

A few months ago I stared blankly into the bottom of my Ben & Jerry’s pint, wondering why I chose to mingle with the ice cream instead of the gym, yet again. My motivation to exercise wasn’t just missing; it had vanished. I had lost all focus and my health was suffering. I kept gaining weight, and that made it even harder to find inspiration to work out.

The thing about motivation is that it disappears when we fall into unhealthy habits. Overeating, working too much, and not taking care of ourselves creates a huge imbalance in our lives that keeps us from connecting with our trueselves. It becomes a vicious cycle that sucks our energy into an energetic black hole. The good news is that motivation is just like a habit; when we consciously focus on it, we can cultivate a regular routine and soon we will be motivation mavens.

The tweetable truth: The thing about motivation is it works when you work it. Keep going it gets easier.

I took these steps to regain focus, and revamp my routine. I have lost weight, found my happiness, and I am fully connected to my true self.

Much like bringing your sexy back, you can bring your motivation back!. These steps helped my coaching clients and me, and I bet they can help you get your groove on too.

1.  Reconnect with Your Why!

Getting in touch with your why is important for lasting success.

Let’s say you have lost motivation to lose weight, and are not working out as much. Your WHY is NOT to hit that golden number on the scale. Go deeper! Your “why” must be aligned with the feeling and the essence of what you ultimately want for yourself….

Do you want to thrive and feel amazing in your body? Do you want to be a vibrant role model for those around you? Your why is always deeper than the first thing that comes to mind. Give yourself permission to reconnect with your why and let that guide you.

2.  Befriend Your Brain

Choosing positive thoughts is essential for making your goals a reality. We all know how nasty our internal thoughts can get. Don’t let them run the show. Instead, choose positive thoughts and focus on the good aspects of your journey and what you are doing to reach your goal.

3.  Connect with your Inspiration

When we are not inspired it makes it really hard to accomplish what we want to do. When you are inspired, motivation becomes effortless. Connect with people who inspire you, as well as the places and things that feed your inner fire;  the inspiration will take you far and lead you to lasting success. I recently moved to Hawaii for a few months to be inspired and connect to my motivation. I love to play with the world, and this natural paradise has re-energized me and fueled my inner motivation. Connect with what will inspire you and let it guide you daily.

4. Press Play

The final step to getting your motivation back is to press the play button. That is right, play your way to success. Here’s the thing, if it isn’t fun you won’t stick with it. If everyone else is doing it, but it doesn’t feel right for you then go your own way. Find something that is motivating.

You don’t have to meditate or do yoga to feel alive, if you are more inspired by outdoor fitness press the play button and you will be successful. By the same token, if yoga is your jam, than play your way into each pose. Make everything a joyful experience and you will reap the rewards of reaching your goals with effortless motivation.

    Shannon,
Great video. I love the Hawaii beauty addition to your videos (thanks for the occasional panning around). The combo with music and your messages of enlightened positive wisdom is priceless.

Definitely got to give you props for navigating people and “cliffs” while filming. Imagine that’s a skill you never thought you’d become a master in, eh?

From a personal standpoint, your topic truly has me believing what I have started to understand over the last 2-3 years. The shear concept we have an amazing inner power to manifest what we want/need and the universe, god, little fairies, spirit family, or whatever you believe in will respond. Just 5 days ago, I threw an SOS to the universe around a problem I have experienced many, many times. Losing heart along the way of changing my life.

I say losing heart, as that’s just what it feels like. In all honesty, I’ve never understood it until watching your video. I’ll put in the work towards healthy changes, start to see positive results, but then I’ll start to lose heart. I get to a point where I can see a brighter future with just keeping on the path I’m on, but it’s like my mind starts to tell me that things are already bit better and why keep going.

Your 4 steps to get motivation back correlate with an area I now understand about myself. MAINTENANCE.

To not just put one’s head down and push, push, push. But rather to take the time along the way to remind myself why I’m doing what I’m doing. To re-enforce that new belief I’m taking and running with. Looking back, I see how running with a new positive belief for so long and not checking back in with the WHY has left me falling back into old bad habits.

A successful tool I have used to find motivation is YouTube, which led me to find you. This past October I did a live-a-board scuba diving trip to Cocos Island filled with many Hammerheads and even a Whale Shark at minute 41 on my last dive. I read a book about the power of our subconscious mind and it got me thinking. I set out on a goal to retrain my subconscious and fill it with positive and motivational healthy beliefs. Then those old unhealthy habits (old beliefs that serve me no good, won’t be my subconscious minds default anymore). Add a computer, tablet and smart phone and from days start to day’s end I would always have motivational compilations being played. At home, work, and while driving. The ones with lively music added, great clips of movies or speeches from successful people (Will Smith, Steve Jobs, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eric Thomas, etc) and great visuals of life’s natural beauty and endless amazing things people over this world are doing. Playing with the world one might say!

I now see how over the last couple weeks, I allowed my old bad habits to take away my motivation after life threw me some less than positive curveballs. I also recognise I have since slowly stopped watching those YouTube compilations.

Thankfully, my SOS was answered by the universe in the form of your video and message. Maybe I’m getting closer to my happy and that’s the type of magical things that happen when you do.
Once again, thanks for you being you. I have enjoyed getting caught up on all your past videos streaming them on my TV while repainting my entire condo over the last few weeks. I also got your book last week and thus far 2 thumbs up.

Ryan, what a great message. I love that you are painting your condo with inspiration on the side. It is so awesome how the universe works and you bet there are no accidents. Happiness is a choice, I am so glad you are choosing it. Glad you are digging the Hawaii aspects. Cheers and Hugs, Shannon

    Hi Shannon,

Love that you got yourself to Maui and that you are playing with your self and the world.
I took myself to New Mexico for a week and played in mother nature and feel refreshed.
    Love Susan

Your very inspiring! I’m in search of my motivation to get into a healthier body. I know what I have to do, I have the tools, yet I can’t seem to turn the procrastination off.

After watching your video I feel the kick in the butt I need to get up on this train. The first thing I have to do is wake up earlier which I have trouble with. I feel like once I start doing it, (I’ve done it before) I’ll find the motivation to fulfill my morning workout. Oh man, once I do & have it done – I feel so good about myself & it sets the tone for the rest of my day! This should be my inspiration, so I officially just named it as my “Inspiration!”

Okay, I’ll try harder tomorrow & keep you posted of my process. This is what I need to take place in order to get the ball rolling in other aspects go my life. I guess I could say I’m in a preparing mode.

Thank-you Shannon! I’m so excited I found your site & look forward to more inspiration! Your super fantastic!
