The Truth About Your Gurus

Click to watch and share.

Maybe you are working on manifesting a goal but feel stuck because it hasn’t happened yet. Then you get an email message from a guru, author, expert, or even a good friend—someone you admire and take advice from. As you read their status update or fancy email announcing their plans to travel to Europe, or get married, or have children, you can’t help but think, “Wow, they have it figured out. I am so far behind.”

When I was depressed working in corporate, I felt that way. I would always look at my teachers and gurus and ask, “How did they get to be so happy, healthy, wise?” which in turn made me feel bad about myself because I wasn’t as happy, healthy, or wise. This negative energy didn’t serve me, and it certainly isn’t helping you.

Other people can make us feel less than and even inferior when we are not satisfied with our own life. But the real truth, like Eleanor Roosevelt said, is that, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

So it really has nothing to do with the other person but with your relationship to you. The last thing I ever want to do is make you feel bad about yourself, which is why today I am addressing the truth about your gurus. Chances are you like my advice and look forward to my weekly blog (I am so happy you are here, BTW), but seeing me gallivanting around the world with my GoPro in new, awesome locations could be deceiving. So I’d like to take this opportunity to lift you up by reminding you of a few small things. In today’s video, I share the truth about your gurus, and secrets of the teachers. I am honored to be on this adventure of life with you, and I hope you dig today’s message as much as I did filming it.

There is a misconception in self- improvement circles that says your teacher, guru, idol, the people you admire must have it all figured out, and their lives are perfect. If you compare yourself to other people—especially your teachers, gurus, idols—these steps can help you stop:

1. Take Action today

Instead of looking at others and thinking. “Wow, they have it figured out. I suck,” ask what action step you can take to get to where you want to be. You will get more confidence in the action, and this will fuel you forward.

2. Approach life as an giant experiment

Remember, no one is immune to life lessons on earth, so letting go of the need to have it all figured out can help you be more in the journey. This will release you from the confines of thinking you need to have it all figured out. Play more and release expectations on how your life “should” look—enjoy what is going well.

3. Use fear as a motivator

You may worry you are off track, which is a dialogue of fear. Fear loves to make us feel less than. Address this fear by pushing through it. The people who are gurus, teachers, and experts pushed through this fear. They didn’t let it stop them, and that is the only difference between them and you. What goal do you have that lives in your heart, that longs to be seen? Take action today and don’t let fear stop you. Instead, use it as a motivator.

What action step will you take to today to create the life you want? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
