How to Activate Your Sovereignty & Reclaim Your Power

What is the single most important thing to do today, right now, to move towards a better world?

This is the question I’ve been asking myself all year. Sometimes the best thing we can do to help the world is focus on our own world and do what we can to feel better right now. 2020 has been a year of contrast. Each one of us has navigated it to the best of our ability and as the end of the year comes to a close I wanted to share some inspiration with you. In the spirit of what is the single most important thing we can do to feel better, and improve our lives and the world I went to my book Joy Seeker, and found a perfect story to illustrate today’s lesson.

Today I share my favorite story from my book Joy Seeker with you, which answers the question of what is the single most important thing we can do to move toward a better world…

We may think we know what we want, but rest assured the Universe always knows what is truly best for us. When I say the Universe, really, I am referencing source love, the energy of divinity and your higher self. It is all the same; there is no separation. And this became crystal clear to me when I returned to Costa Rica a couple of years ago. I participated in shamanic journeys. At that point in my life, I was good. I felt extraordinary happiness, joy, a deep connection to myself, my career, and my life. Why go to a healing center? Because I was called. My soul called me; I felt the pull to go. We all have these pulls, from the heart, from our soul, that say, “This is for your highest good.” We must continue to trust and respect these nudges and openly accept the invitation to play with the world. I trusted this guidance and dived in deeply to another travel experience.

With this in mind the shamans asked us to set an intention before the sacred ceremony. And my intention was to “show me who I will become.” I wanted to know the next level of life would be. Where was all this leading? Secretly hoping to confirm my desires, I wanted to see visions of me on Ted Talk stages and selling millions of books and becoming a #1 New York Times bestseller. Would I see myself leading even more retreats around the world and staying connected to my joy in everything that I do? The intention was enticing. It was intoxicating to think about what I might become. After all, when we do all this work on ourselves, what’s next? The sky is the limit, right?

I dived into my shamanic journey with a focus on the future. “Show me who I will become.” As the evening turned into the early morning, I found myself feeling a little deflated. I still hadn’t gotten any clarity or insights about my future. Feeling slightly let down, I surrendered. I decided it wasn’t important and I would just participate fully in the journey right now. Which meant, let go of all expectations and just be present for what is unfolding.

And then the shamans called us up for a blessing. We sat in a half-circle and for what I wished was an eternity, but was really closer to forty minutes, I got my miracle. As the shamans danced, chanted, sang, and brushed me with leaves, the ritual took hold and love poured through my every fiber. I felt so cared for—seven shamans all focusing on me, tending to me, clearing my energy and loving me, for me. As they worked their magic and focused on the blessing, I ascended into a higher vibration and felt more love than I’ve ever felt before. My entire body felt like it would burst with loving compassion. All I saw was bright white light and my inner voice said,

This! This is it!!! This is who you will become because this is who you are: love and light.

Tears of joy, of wonder, of gratitude fell from my eyes. It suddenly all made so much sense. I thought my future needed to be some destination I could aspire to, a new accolade, a life achievement benchmark, a goal manifested, but in that moment I saw that none of that really matters.

It is not who we are. It is what we are.

And what we are is love. We all come from light, for we are light. And the shamans blessed me with the vision of truth, that joy is our truth, and it is all we need for a good life.

Every single one of us is part of the same light, yet so many of us feel and see the separation. We think we are separate from everyone else; this pushing against others keeps us from accessing our truth. In that moment I made a promise to myself to stay connected to this truth, because this feeling of pure love felt more joyful than anything I had ever experienced before. It was more real than any outer accomplishment. And this feeling was truth—it was in me all along.

This light is yours, too. No one can take it from you. No matter what you go through in life, no matter what chapter you are in, and no matter how much 2020 has rocked you, or what setback comes crashing in, you are eternal light. You are not what you do or where you live or what you have. All that is just part of being alive, and having goals and things that make us feel alive and purposeful is wonderful. It’s part of living a rich life. But defining myself by these goals is what died that day. I no longer need to reach anything in order to be happy or connected to my true self.

It doesn’t matter what I might become, because I am already all that I can be.

You too, you don’t have to change yourself or become anything. It’s all there inside of you, already beaming within. So as we close out the year, let’s agree to let go of the trying, and the needing to know our future and the outcome. Let’s surrender our life to the greater notion that all is in right order. Because my true self is, just like you are and always will be, enough.

This is how we reclaim our power…remember who you truly are.

Live from your heart, be your true self and shine the light that you are.
