The Sacred Timing of Your Story (with Andrea Owen and Shannon Kaiser)

Today’s podcast is exciting because I sit down with my friend and fellow author, Andrea Owen, and share a super-secret project I’ve been working on for the past few years — one I haven’t told a soul about. Seriously, not even my mom knows. And there’s a reason for that.

Sometimes we’re still living the story. Other times, it feels too sacred — or too soon — to share. Sometimes we need to protect it from outside influences. When projects are in incubation, we owe it to our ideas to give them space, keeping anything from diluting the vision while it’s still forming. And as a recovering people pleaser, I’ve learned I can’t invite too many opinions into something that feels this special.

Sometimes we hold things close because we’re still finding the meaning, still allowing the story to unfold. Other times, we’re still healing. What I’ve learned over the past 15 years in this work is that the more I protect what’s sacred, the more I honor my purpose and calling.

So I’ll ask you: What’s been in your heart? What have you lived through that changed you? Today, Andrea Owen and I talk about the power of writing and healing through creative expression.

Today, for the first time, we share our projects and the behind the scenes on the podcast.

This is one of the gifts writing can give us, an opportunity to honor our voice, share our perspective, and to own our narrative from a place of truth and alignment.

Even if you don’t consider yourself a writer, you’ll find a lot of juicy insights here, because what we’re really talking about is creative expression and honoring your voice.

My hope is that this conversation gives you permission to honor what’s in your heart and write for the sake of pleasure. I’ve made a career out of writing, and I’m so thankful for that, but it’s more than a career. It’s a purpose. It’s my passion. To me, writing is like breathing.

In today’s episode, we talk about the power of healing through writing — whether it’s journaling, writing a book, writing poems, or creative expression in any form. As you may have seen, I’ve been writing more lyrics for new songs lately and getting into cooking and writing original recipes. Writing, in all its forms, has the power to transform us.

You don’t want to miss this episode.

Andrea is one of my good friends, so this really feels like sitting down at a coffee shop together. So grab your favorite latte and tune in.

This episode is not just for people who consider themselves writers! It’s for anyone who has something inside them that wants to come out, whether that’s a memoir, a poem, a Substack post, or a raw caption about what’s happening in the world right now. Andrea and I have been writing professionally for nearly 20 years, and in this conversation we get honest about fear, voice, silence, and the behind the scenes of our process and how we move though fear and why now, more than ever, your story needs to be told.

Here’s what you’ll hear in this episode:

  • Why writing is one of the most powerful tools for healing, even if you never publish a word
  • The difference between writing that processes pain and writing that actually transforms it
  • Why so many people struggle to trust their voice (and what’s really underneath that)
  • What I discovered when I wrote the most vulnerable story I lived as fiction first
  • Why the reaction you’re afraid of is also the clarity you need
  • How writing to one person instead of an audience can change everything
  • What makes a piece of writing truly connect with readers right now
  • Details on our free April 14th training and six-week writing mentorship

Andrea and I are both in the thick of writing the words we are here to say, both pushing against the publishing industry’s-tired advice to stick to what sells, and how we are believing in ourselves, and message and letting that drive us forward. We are determined to show you the power of your own voice and convinced that your story (however messy, however unfinished), matters.

We hope this conversation gives you permission to start!
